Welding positions explained
6G, TIG and MIG, explained
Pick a process to see how it works and what to tell us. This is an explanation, not a qualification test criterion.
6G pipe position
A test pipe is held fixed at about 45 degrees, so the welder works around the whole circumference through flat, vertical and overhead orientations.
- The pipe cannot be turned, so the welder moves around it.
- Used as a demanding position test for pipe welding.
- Relevant to piping on vessels and in yards.
- Tell us the pipe material and joint type when you enquire.
TIG welding
TIG (gas tungsten arc) uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode with filler rod added by hand, giving fine control on thin material, root passes and stainless steel.
- Two hands: torch in one, filler rod in the other.
- Slower, but precise and clean.
- Often chosen for pipe root runs and stainless work.
- Tell us the material and thickness when you enquire.
MIG welding
MIG (gas metal arc) feeds a continuous wire electrode through the gun with shielding gas, which suits faster deposition on plate and structural steel.
- One hand on the gun; wire feeds automatically.
- Faster travel and good for longer runs.
- Common for plate, brackets and structural fabrication.
- Tell us the plate or fabrication task when you enquire.
03 · 6G pipe
Why the 6G position matters
In 6G the pipe is fixed at about 45 degrees, so the welder works through flat, vertical and overhead positions in one joint. It is widely used to prove pipe welding skill.
Sacramento Marine Services lists 6G welders in its supplied trades. Tell the team the pipe size and material when you ask.

Welding questions

6G refers to welding a pipe that is fixed at roughly 45 degrees so the welder must work through every position around it. Sacramento Marine Services lists 6G welders among its supplied trades on the labour supply page, and you can state the pipe details when you enquire.
TIG gives fine control with a separate filler rod, so it is often chosen for thin material, root runs and stainless steel, while MIG feeds wire continuously and suits faster work on plate. Tell the team your material and thickness through the Sacramento Marine Services contact page so the right welders are proposed.
Yes, welders and structural fitters can be requested for fabrication and steel work as well as repair jobs. Describe the task, materials and location in your enquiry, and the operations desk at Sacramento Marine Services will advise on a suitable crew and timeline.
Share the process or position needed (6G, TIG or MIG), the material and thickness, whether it is hot work in a confined space, the location and your start date. The more detail you give the operations team, the faster it can confirm a squad.
Safe working is part of the brief for every marine welder, and crews can also take safety courses from our training desk, such as Enclosed Space Entry. See the featured courses page for what is currently listed.
Short jobs can be raised in the same way as longer ones, by sending the scope, location and dates. The team will confirm whether a single welder or a small squad fits, and you can start with the labour supply enquiry route.
